About the Choir

​

The Rock Festival Choir is Alnwick’s renowned chamber choir, directed by Peter Brown. The choir was formed in 2003 to celebrate the restoration of the organ in the ancient church of St Phillip and St James, in the Northumbrian village of Rock, and has continued to develop its repertoire over the years. The choir usually sings unaccompanied and performs a very wide range of music, both sacred and secular, from the 16th to the 21st centuries.

Rock Festival Choir has established an excellent reputation, winning praise for its rich and beautiful sound and its engaging performances of an immense range of musical repertoire, from Tudor anthems and Rachmaninov’s Vespers to Cole Porter and North East folk songs.

The choir includes a number of composers and instrumentalists and has performed world premieres of works by Peter Brown and Cheryl Camm.

Rock Festival Choir usually performs in St Paul’s Church, Alnwick. The choir also visits other venues including Brinkburn Priory. Previous concerts have been given in churches and halls across Northumberland and beyond, including the SAGE Gateshead as part of the Alnwick Sings concerts. The choir is regularly invited to sing for special occasions and events, including the opening of the Woodhorn Experience Museum and at weddings.

In 2018 and 2019 Rock Festival Choir performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, giving concerts at the iconic Greyfriars Kirk and Canongate Kirk, which were warmly received and highly commended by their audiences.
